OCR: 2) The water is heated, converted to steam, often superheated and led to the engine through a throttle value, which is normally open fully during periods when it is desired to operate at maximum continuous power and efficiency. 3) Steam is allowed to enter the engine cylinder at boiler pressure for a fraction of the power stroke, depending on output power required. This is referred to as the amount of cutoff being used. 4) Following cutoff, the steam expands against the piston, much as it does in a gas or diesel engine. 5) Exhaust is to atmosphere or, preferably, into a condenser, where the spent steam is condensed and returned to the boiler by a feed water pump not shown.
